Tips for Managing Multiples
If you are a new parent of twins - or other multiples - then you likely know just how overwhelming it can be raising them. Thankfully, there are a number of tips that are available for you to utilize that can help you keep your life a bit more organized and stress-free. Of course, life with multiples is not always going to be stress-free, but you can certainly ease the burden by preparing yourself both mentally and physically for the day to day life of having multiple infants. Primarily, the best way to get prepared is by stocking up on baby products that you know you are going to need. This is especially important for parents with more than one baby since you will more than likely consume your baby supplies at a rapid rate.
Stocking up on diapers, wipes, formula, bottles, onesies and blankets will ensure that you are ready when one of your children needs something. Keep an eye out for sales and keep receipts in case you need to return any of the clothing items you have purchased that were not worn. Too, by shopping at second hand stores for gently used equipment and clothing, you can save a considerable amount of time and money on products you are going to need more than one of. You will probably also be able to find a quality double stroller that will be a significant help whenever you have to leave the house with your twins. Be it a tandem or side-by-side model, a stroller is something you definitely do not want to be without as a parent of multiple infants.
Another invaluable tool in your life with twins is help. Let us face it, people love babies and when there is more than one at a time, your friends and family will want to spend as much time around them as they can. Take advantage of any and all offers for babysitting, house cleaning, cooking or doing laundry that come your way. Having a baby in and of itself is exhausting enough, but with multiples, that exhaustion is often doubled and magnified since they are often hungry or sleepy at the same time, and without help, it can be quite overwhelming. This leads us to one of the most important tips you should always remember: take some time for yourself. Just because you are a parent, you still need to make sure your needs are met. Not only will this help you feel refreshed and energised, but you will maintain your sense of identity outside of mom or dad. Include your significant other in this process so you two can maintain your bond and grow stronger as a family.
Finally, when embracing your new life as the parent of twins – or other multiples – it is important to remain flexible and keep your priorities in tact. Just remember that anything and everything will change, and often times will in the blink of an eye, leaving those who are not flexible more overwhelmed than their less rigid counterparts. Once you have established a solid routine for your infants, it will make it easier for you to switch gears in any given situation, increasing your chance to remain calm and less stressed. Above all, enjoy your babies as this time is incredibly precious, help them learn and grow, make memories and love them endlessly.
