Tips to Make Breastfeeding Twins Easier

Breastfeeding can be hard enough when you only have one baby, but when you have twins or multiples it becomes even more difficult. At times you might feel that all you are doing with your time is nursing infants. However, there are a number of things you can do to make this process easier on yourself while still keeping the babies happy and healthy.

The first thing you might want to do is invest in some of the baby products that can help you out. A heavy duty pump can help a lot since it will increase your milk supply (so you won’t have to worry the twins aren’t getting enough) and it will also provide a supply of milk you can store for those times you just can’t nurse. You can rent one of these, or purchase one for yourself, though they can be quite expensive. In some cases, especially if a baby is having trouble nursing, your health insurance might even cover the cost. A nursing pillow can also be helpful in comfortably positioning the baby (or babies) as they are nursing.

It is also a good idea to try to relax as much as possible during the process of nursing the twins. This will help the milk to flow and keep everybody happy, since the babies will be able to feel the tension if you are not relaxed. You don’t have to worry about keeping the house perfect or anything like that, it is okay to let others do this or let it slide. Just concentrate on taking care of the infants and keeping them fed.

One way to make it easier to relax is to accept any and all help that is offered, and to ask for help when you need it. While you are feeding the twins, your partner or friends and family members can help to keep the house clean, as well as burping and changing the babies so you don’t have to try to do everything for yourself. Besides getting help getting things done, don’t forget there are a lot of resources you can turn to for advice if you are having difficulties with breastfeeding. These include other breastfeeding mothers, local groups for moms with multiples, and La Leche League. They can give you ideas on what you might be able to do in order to make the whole process easier.

Don’t forget that in order to take care of the twins you need to take care of yourself as well. Don’t worry about getting rid of those extra pounds from your pregancy right away. Make sure that you drink lots of water and eat plenty of healthy foods so that your body has the fuel it needs to produce milk for the babies as well as to keep you healthy.

It is important you keep trying if you are having difficulties. You don’t want to give up right away if something doesn’t work. There are lots of different positions you can try, as well as schedules, and nursing the twins either together or separately. A lactation consultant or other mothers with more than one infant might have some suggestions you could try, so ask around if you are stuck.
